Finding the right elementary school sets the foundation for your child’s entire academic journey. We analyzed data from over 60,000 elementary schools across the country to identify the highest-performing schools in 2026.

How We Ranked Elementary Schools

Our rankings are based on the MySchoolScout composite score, which factors in state standardized test performance in math and reading, student-teacher ratios, and data completeness. Schools must serve grades K-5 (or a subset) and have sufficient reported data to qualify.

All scores are computed within each state, meaning schools are compared to peers in the same state rather than nationally. This accounts for differences in state testing standards and funding levels. For a deeper dive into our scoring methodology, check out our methodology page.

What the Best Elementary Schools Have in Common

After analyzing hundreds of top-performing elementary schools, several patterns emerge.

Small class sizes are nearly universal among top-rated schools. The highest-scoring elementary schools average 14-16 students per teacher, well below the national average of 22. This matters especially in the early grades, where individual attention helps children build foundational reading and math skills.

Consistent academic performance is another hallmark. Top schools don’t just have one good year — they show strong test results across multiple years and multiple subjects. A school that scores well in both math and reading is more likely to have a strong overall academic program than one that excels in only one subject.

Community engagement shows up indirectly in the data. Schools in areas with high parent involvement tend to have better outcomes, though this isn’t something we measure directly. If you’re evaluating a top-ranked school, ask about PTA participation, volunteer opportunities, and parent-teacher communication.

The Northeast continues to dominate elementary school rankings, with Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey schools consistently scoring among the highest in the nation. Massachusetts in particular benefits from rigorous state standards and strong teacher preparation programs.

The Midwest is a strong performer that often flies under the radar. Schools in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa regularly appear in the top tier, especially in rural and suburban districts where class sizes tend to be smaller.

The South shows the widest range. States like Virginia and North Carolina have pockets of excellence, particularly in suburban districts near research universities and military bases. Other southern states are making gains but still lag in overall averages.

The West varies significantly by state. California’s top schools compete with anyone nationally, but the state’s average is pulled down by large, underfunded urban districts. Colorado and Washington also have strong showings in suburban areas.

Beyond the Rankings

Rankings are useful for discovery, but they’re just the beginning of your research. Here’s what we recommend:

Use the rankings to build a shortlist, then dig into individual school profiles on MySchoolScout. Look at the breakdown of scores — a school ranked #500 nationally might be #1 in your district, which is what matters most for your daily life.

Consider practical factors like commute time, before- and after-school care, and whether the school’s schedule works for your family. The best school on paper isn’t the best school if it adds an hour to your commute each way.

Visit your top choices. Walk the hallways during a school day. Watch how teachers interact with students. Look at the work displayed on bulletin boards. These small details tell you more about a school’s culture than any dataset.

Every school in our rankings links to a detailed profile page with score breakdowns, nearby school comparisons, and district information.
