The district's origins date back to 1950, when twelve local districts consolidated to form Dexter Agricultural Schools, later renamed Dexter Community Schools 1. The district serves the City of Dexter and portions of eight townships: Dexter, Webster, Scio, Northfield, Hamburg, Lima, Freedom, and Lodi 1. The school campus consists of nine buildings located within walking distance of one another 1. In addition to Dexter High School, the campus includes Jenkins ECLC Preschool, Bates School, Anchor and Beacon (Dexter Early Elementary Complex), Wylie Elementary, Creekside Intermediate, Mill Creek Middle, and Dexter Alternative School 1. Historical records indicate that Dexter's first school was built in 1830, with subsequent facilities constructed in 1843 and 1857 1. The 1857 Dexter Union Schoolhouse, located at 7714 Ann Arbor Street, was rebuilt in 1887 and received a major addition in 1936 1.
